The cocaine addict, the alcoholic, the smoker, and the sweetness addict all have their health being ruined and they all can not stop the damaging activity, for the same reason. They can not stop doing it, even though they may be well versed that the continuation of the this may eventually go as far as ruining their life or even outright killing them. Some refer to this as the "high", the buzz, adrenalin rush, you hear all sorts of names for it, but no matter what the source of this "pleasurable attribute" is, it is really what some refer to as an "altered state of consciousness."
You can even get hooked on watching TV if it is an engrained source of pleasure. If this substance or action (example a jogger gets in an altered state of consciousness quite often in running, and gets "hooked" so to speak on jogging and will almost go jogging no matter what.) If you are hooked on sweetness and you get a pleasure state from it, getting your master control system to give it up will take some doing. The smoker gets a habitual established nicotine buzz so to speak and the smokers master subconscious control will not allow giving it up. The alcoholic is an extreme example, that there is no real known way to help assure an alcoholic he can give up the high he gets from booze. For some to give up their "sweetness" addiction is not much less difficult.
Not uncommon for being "hooked" on most anything.
